personal prayer, family prayer, reverence for the Lord’s Day, Sunday
attendance at Divine Liturgy, and ever greater devotion to the Most Holy
Eucharist. If you are interested in joining the Apostleship of Prayer at
Holy Eucharist Church, informational pamphlets are available in the
vestibule of the church, or contact Fr. Peter Babej at the church office
for more information.
Lighting Candles
Before entering the Temple proper, it is the custom of Byzantine
Churches to make an Offering of Light. When we come into Church, we
venerate icons, and at the same time, we light the candle and palce them
on the candle stands.
For your convenience, a candle box is provide in the nave of the church,
right next to the vigil candles. A minimum donation is requested to
reimburse the Church to cover the cost of the candle. Most churches use
on pure beeswax candles as per the Canons and because they give a pure,
clear and steady light. “You are the light of the world ... In the same
way, your light must shine .. so that seeing your good works, they may
give praise to your Father in heaven.” (Mt. 5:14-16) Lighting candles
are an eloquent symbol of both Christ, our light; and that we are in
Christ (both those who are glorified Saints depicted in icons and those
called be be saints who come to church, and despite our sins and by
God’s grace alone, form the Body of Christ.). Jesus said: “I am the
Light of the world. Anyone who follows me will not be walking in the dar;
he will have the light of life.” (Jn. 8:12)
MAKING REVERENCE
When we enter the Temple proper (ie. having passed through the
Vestibule), we make a “Reverence” - the sign of the cross and bow.
People often make three reverences. Also when we exit, we make a
reverence (or 3).
Renovation Updates
Dear brothers & sisters in Christ,
Coming to church to past few weeks, you have probably noticed the
scaffolding on the east side of the church (laneway). Important work is
well in progress on the east stone wall, as well as on the concrete
floor in the garage.
The Garage situation
For many years, water and salt water during the winter season has been
leaking through a damaged drain and several cracks into the concrete
floor and onto the furnace below. This has caused serious damage to
pipes and water pumps in and around the furnace. Most importantly, a
concrete support beam has been seriously damaged, to the extent that the
concrete floor in the garage could collapse under the weight of a car.
Since there is no significant parking space in the furnace room area, we
were wisely advised not to park vehicles in the garage.
After obtaining and reviewing several quotes, the Everest Restoration
Company was contracted to make the necessary repairs. Most of the work
is already been done. By next week the drain will be replaced and the
concrete floor will be waterproofed. Scaffolding from the furnace room
will then be removed allowing us to do the necessary clean-up. The cost
of this renovation project is $30,000.00 dollars.
Our East Wall
If you have ever looked closely at the east wall in the past, you would
have seen large cracks running horizontally along the wall, just above
each row of windows. These cracks are the result of building shifting
and the rusting of steel lintels above each window.
As a result, water as been leaking into the interior space, creating a
nice damp and warm atmosphere for ants, other undesirables and uninvited
guests. Fine sawdust along the lower windows in the Mother Mary Room
indicate that we may have a very happy and well-fed colony of carpenter
ants living in our east wall (new parishioners).
Everest Restoration have also been contracted by the church to make the
necessary repairs to the east stone wall. The workers are removing the
stones and the rusted lintels over all the windows. New lintels are
being installed and the stones will be carefully replaced. More than
half of the work has been done. The noise is very loud on weekdays. We
thank the staff and children at the Montessori school for their patience
and understanding.
Hall Kitchen
We need to properly repair our washrooms before we can begin any hall
kitchen renovations. This project will be expensive. Just to replace our
old dishwasher is going to cost us $20,000 dollars. If we want to
replace cupboards, old equipment, tiles, ceilings, etc. and do it
according to current code and standards, we are looking at quite a bit
of money.
Before we begin this project, we will definitely have to pay off all our
other current projects and have collected at least one third of the
projected cost for the kitchen renovation.
In the meantime, our sincerely thanks to John “the homeless guy” for
making the kitchen and hall area brighter, cleaner and much more
pleasant. Our hall rental customers have commented on the cleanliness
and are very pleased.
Our Famous Dome Windows
As reported earlier, our dome window project was ready to go in
September 2007. While the first windows were being installed in the main
central dome, we noticed that the windows were not the windows we had
selected.
To our dismay, the glass company had manufactured all the aluminum
glazing and beautiful thermal windows, but not the windows we chose. We
are insisting that we want the windows we selected. The mistake is not
our problem. So far, we have not taken legal action, but may need to do
this if things are not resolved quickly. We need new windows!!!! After
each snowstorm or rainfall, we have water leaking into the church, along
walls on onto pews. If it’s raining outside next time you come to
church, check your seats for puddles. It might not be you.
The cost of this project: $130,000.00 dollars.
Fundraising
Over the past few years, we have been slowly collecting donations for
our Renovation Fund. In total, we have collected about $85,000 dollars.
Of course, this amount will not cover the cost of all our planned
restoration projects. We will need to continue fundraising to complete
all our projects, foreseen and unforeseen. There may be a few emergency
projects that may come up unexpectedly. Murphy’s law.
May God bless us!
