METHOD
USED AT HOLY EUCHARIST
BIBLE STUDY AND PRAYER
1. READING.
The First Reading. One person reads the selected passage out loud, slowly and attentively. Everyone presents listens and follows the reading in their Bible. A moment of silence follows the reading. Then, each person in turn, announces one word or a phrase that spoke to them (or attracted their attention) during the reading. No discussion.
2. MEDITATION.
The Second Reading. The leader of the group reads the selected passage a second time. This time however, the reading is taken in segments. After each verse or segment - explanation and discussion follows, with the deepening of one’s personal understanding of the word of God. What questions emerge? What is the text saying to us today? Is there a new point of view to consider? What are the Scriptures asking us to do? What new action is called for? How to we incarnate the Scripture reading in to our daily life?
3. PRAYER OF THE HEART.
The Third Reading and prayer of the heart. One selected person reads the passage a third time, slowly and attentively, stopping for a moment of silence after each verse. Those present listen attentively to each verse and during the silence that follows, they respond with a silent and spontaneous prayer from their heart. A few minutes of silence follow.
4. ILLUMINATION.
The Fourth Reading The passage is read a fourth time, without breaks for silence. All listen attentively, as if at the feet of Jesus, without evoking any thoughts, images or feelings. The reading is received with faith - the Lord is indeed invisibly present and He is speaking to us.
